TES IV: Oblivion (GOTY Edition)
The Game of the Year Edition includes the original game plus Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles expansion pack. This makes for a good deal since it is much cheaper than buying the game plus the expansions individually. TES IV: Oblivion is rated M because of blood and gore, language, sexual themes, use of alcohol, and violence.
I have played quite a number of role-playing games (RPGs) before but I found this game to be refreshingly unique. Oblivion is a free roam environment. "Live another life, in another world" is their motto. It is an RPG that has new races and levelling up mechanics. It can be experienced either as a first- or third-person view. You can do a little bit of everything in the game as you progress through the story. The more often you do things, the better you become at doing it and thus increase in level. However, the whole environment also increases with you incrementally. Thus, you more or less have the same difficulty in killing creatures whether you're low level or higher. Familiarity with the game and your character, however, makes it subjectively easier to control your character and make him more effective.
I actually am only through with just the main story and after more than 110 hours of playing, I am already a level 25 Crusader. My character has roamed Cyrodill for 80 days, completed 60 quests, had 693 skill increases and 43 training sessions, been jailed for 1 day, killed 526 creatures and 138 people, found 77 places, picked 48 locks, made 138 potions, was able to close 10 Oblivion gates, read 254 books, slept for 292 hours (average of 3 and a half hours per day), told 1151 jokes, and contracted 11 diseases. My character is a Pit Bull at the Arena, a Pickpocket of the Thieves Guild, a Pilgrim of the Nine Divines, an Associate of the Fighters Guild, an Apprentice of the Mages Guild, Knight-Errant of the Knights of the Nine and of the Knights of the White Stallion, a Knight Brother of the Blades and lastly, Champion of Cyrodil of the Order of the Dragon.
The story is good and there are multiple side quests as you go along through the main storylines. The graphics are great, but again as you go along you get more of the same texture especially of the dungeons/ruins which are all roughly similar. Loading/save times are acceptable. The game mechanics, game screen, and controls are relatively simple and easy to master. Game combat is also quite an engaging experience(for an RPG). Prolonged playability and high replay value make this game a very good buy.
4.5 stars.
